Leopard on prowl, villagers terrified

leopardA leopard in its prime has sneaked into a Cooch Behar village three days back triggering panic among the villagers there. The animal protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, has attacked eight persons including a forester, one of the injured persons. This place is almost 12 kilometres from Cooch Behar town. Although the forest department tried to dart the animal for two consecutive days, all efforts to tranquilize it failed. It was really difficult to target the animal as it had taken cover under bamboo bushes and atop branches of trees. The department brought two kunki (trained) elephants from Jaldapara to tranquilize the animal. But they could not locate the leopard throughout the day.
